The importance of proper infant nutrition

The baby doubles its weight in the first five to six months, but triples it by the first year.

Infants and toddlers are unique in many ways. They are in a period of rapid growth and development. A healthy and nutritionally balanced diet is of utmost importance in this period, not only from the point of view of rapid growth and development, but also from the point of view of developing good nutritional habits for later periods of life.

Proper nutrition of infants and toddlers is vital for growth, smooth and efficient functioning and regeneration of the organism and for good health. How important nutrition is in the first year of life is shown by the fact that the baby doubles its weight in the first five to six months, but triples it by the first year. At the same time, their immune and nervous systems develop intensively, and in addition to a sufficient amount, they also need an optimal composition of nutrients. For infants and toddlers, the need for energy and nutrients is great, but there is little appetite, so we must make sure that meals are regular, frequent, small and, of course, as well composed as possible. The latest guidelines for a healthy, balanced diet for babies and toddlers therefore differ significantly from the ones for a healthy diet for adults and dictate an increased intake of protein and fat and a lower intake of dietary fiber. Only at the end of the second year and sometime until school enrollment, children gradually switch to a balanced family diet.
